For nearly 300 years, cast iron has been a fixture in architecture all over the world due to its strength and durability and has been heavily used not only in building construction, but also gates, fences, moorings, and railings for private residences and businesses.
At M.E. Contracting, our history with metal working doesn’t go back quite that far, but over the last decade we’ve installed hundreds of cast iron railings along decks, stairs, patios, and balconies for customers throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
Cast iron became a prominent building material in Europe in the mid-1700’s. It is a ferrous alloy that melts at 2,192 degrees Fahrenheit, about 300 degrees cooler than true iron. After the metal has become liquefied, it can be poured into pre-cast molds forming a variety of components for use in construction and decorative ironwork. Once it was imported to North America, it played a prominent role in the Industrial Revolution.
As any Toronto resident knows, Canadian winters are brutal, with several days of sub-zero temperatures and storms that regularly drop several feet of snow each season throughout the area. In these conditions, railings made from materials like wood, composite, plastic, or glass are targets for damage and stress caused by extreme cold, snow, ice, heavy winds, and sudden thaws that kick in out of nowhere each spring. But the cast iron railings designed, manufactured, and installed by the professionals at ME Contracting are a different story. Heavy, extremely durable and resistant to the elements, our cast iron railings are featured prominently in several award winning homes and estates in the Metropolitan. These railings complement a wide range of styles, are known to last for decades, and are price-comparable to other building materials because they require less maintenance and repair.
